The education resources developed by Speaking in Colour are best practice tools designed to embed Aboriginal perspectives into the classroom or workplace. By doing so, people gain a better understanding of Australia’s unique Aboriginal cultures. These tools are used in conjunction with workshop activities to reinforce the key messages and provide tangible examples that support learning goals.

We have developed a series of Aboriginal Education kits in partnership with Aboriginal educators, to further support teachers and employers to implement Aboriginal perspectives into the classroom or workplace. For schools, these kits are linked to the Australian Curriculum to support primary and secondary teachers. The kits are also linked to the Early Learning Frame work to support Early Education workers. These kits are complete with background information, lesson suggestions and hands on resources. This encrouages the students to explore and is particularly effective at engaging visual and kinetic learners. Each of the resources are hand made by local Aboriginal artists.

These kits have proved to be useful to other organisations outside of the education such as: Wandiyali Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander incorporation, Kari and Hunter Local Lands Series.

Banmirra Aboriginal Arts Corporation is delighted to endorse the Possum Skin Cloaks: Aboriginal Education Kit developed by Speaking in Colour in close consultation with our Elders and Community. This valuable resource supports educators, students and parents to learn about Aboriginal cultures in an empowered way. Speaking in Colour has set a new benchmark for the development of a culturally appropriate education kit and we are extremely happy with the results.

Speaking in Colour’s Possum Skin Kit was a valuable learning tool for our K-6 students, all student enjoyed engaging with the kit and its hands on and tactile contents and all gained a different perspective through a variety of KLA relevant activities in Aboriginal culture and traditions. The Possum Skin Kit was a valuable resource which teachers found easy to use and engaging for all students. We would recommend the Possum Skin Kit to all as an excellent addition and support to providing Aboriginal perspectives in all KLAs across K-6.

A fabulous resource that ensures Aboriginal perspectives are woven across the Key Learning Areas in a variety of different ways.

Louise Groves – Assistant Principal - Coal Pt Public school

The Interwoven Aboriginal Education Kit from Speaking In Colour is a wonderfully designed and well thought out resource providing ample supporting material in both a practical sense as well as a theoretical sense to enable teachers to implement an Aboriginal perspective into their teaching. The lesson plans are well structured and sequenced to provide a solid and user friendly basis to incorporate Aboriginal perspectives into a number of different key learning areas, whilst remaining flexible enough to allow the educator to use individual components of the kit to support the needs of their class and their current program. Overall, the weaving kit from Speaking In Colour is a great resource to use as a launch pad into implementing Aboriginal perspectives in a culturally sensitive manner.
